Welcome to Morriston Ladies Choir

Having been formed in an area of strong choral tradition in 1941, the Morriston Ladies Choir recognise the predominance of male choral music in Wales, but regard this as a stimulus and a challenge to foster public appreciation of choral music provided by a ladies choir.

Throughout the years since its inception the choir has naturally undergone change. No longer made up of First Aid Defence Group as they were in 1941, the present membership comes from all walks of life including housewives, education, civil service and the nursing profession. Similarly, with each new musical director that followed their founder Miss Lillian Abbot, the choir’s repertoire has changed. Under the baton of Anthony Williams, the Musical Director since 1976, their repertoire has broadened considerably. The choir is now equally at home singing traditional Welsh Folk songs as it is performing twentieth century pieces or music from West End shows.

The Morriston Ladies Choir is one of the first, if not the first Welsh Ladies Choir to make an impact on the international music scene. They celebrated their Golden Jubilee in 1991 with a tour to Canada, singing in the Parliament Buildings in Toronto and the National Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. The highlight of the tour however was singing in front of 2,500 in a town called Peterborough. In 1993 the choir undertook a short tour of Germany and Holland, singing in Aachen, in Cologne Cathedral and in St Janskerk in Maastricht. In 1997 the choir enjoyed a very successful tour to Torrevieja in Spain – the first ladies choir to be invited to this beautiful area – where they sang to full capacity audiences at all their venues. The choir celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in 2001 with a highly successful tour to Helsinki, Finland and in May 2003 visited Waterford in Ireland. After a five year ‘break’ of being on ‘the road’ the choir undertook a tour of Tuscany singing in Lucca the birthplace of Puccini, Florence and Montecatini. The Choir intends to celebrate its 70th anniversary next year with a tour of Poland – again probably another first for a welsh ladies choir

At home Morriston Ladies Choir sings regularly in concerts for charity and have performed with male voice choirs and military bands. They have appeared on the Welsh language programme ‘Heno’ and are broadcasted regularly on Radio Wales and Swansea Sound.

The choir has taken part in the Festival of Ladies Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall, London; Brangwyn Hall, Swansea; St David’s Hall, Cardiff; Afan Lido, Port Talbot and at Rhyd-y-Car, Merthyr, and will appear again at St David’s Hall in November.

Every year around 1st March, Morriston Ladies Choir presents a concert to celebrate Wales’ Patron Saint, St David at the Tabernacle Chapel, Morriston, raising funds for local charities.
